Welcome to Your First Bikram Yoga Class

Every Bikram Yoga practitioner has had a “first class.” It is challenging, it is sweaty, and it is completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed. Follow the tips below to prepare your body and mind so you can step onto your mat with total confidence.

Before You Arrive

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water during the day before you come in to practice.
  • Eat Lightly: Avoid eating a heavy meal for 2 to 3 hours before class. If you need a boost, a light snack like a banana or a handful of almonds an hour before is perfect.
  • What to Wear: Less is more. Wear lightweight, breathable, form-fitting athletic clothes. Avoid heavy cotton, which traps heat and sweat.

What to Bring

  • A yoga mat and towels will be provided.
  • A bottle of water (electrolytes are a great bonus).
  • An open mind

Survival Tips for Your First Mat

  • Arrive 15 Minutes Early: This gives you time to register, get changed and acclimate to the heated room before class starts.
  • Your Only Goal is to Stay in the Room: You do not need to do every posture perfectly, or even do them at all. If the heat or intensity feels like too much, simply sit or stand still, focus on calm breathing, and rejoin when you’re ready. Just don’t leave the room.
  • Listen to the Dialogue: Bikram yoga is an instructional, spoken dialogue. Look at yourself in the mirror, listen to the teacher’s instruction and listen to your body.
